RECYCLING
Doubling of plastic bottle recycling in the UK
There has been a 100% increase in plastic bottle recycling in the UK over the last two years, according to research funded by WRAP, the Waste & Resources Action Programme, (GB-Banbury OX16 0AH; www.wrap.org.uk) and carried out by Recoup (www.recoup.org). The 2005 survey includes data submitted by all 477 UK local authorities and reveals that collections are now performing at an annualised rate of 48,397 t. This equates to 10.5% of bottles in the household waste stream, with two-thirds (68%) received through kerbside collection and one-third (32%) by user-return schemes. 73% of all UK local authorities now offer collection facilities for plastic bottles and the survey forecasts that 65,703 t will be collected annually in the UK by 2007.
