European recycling accreditation service approves two more packaging products from Belgium and Thailand

European recycling initiative RecyClass (Brussels; www.recyclass.eu) has announced that a metallised HDPE laminate tube and a plastic in-mould label are compatible with relevant European recycling streams.
RecyClass said three different Kim Pai Go Green metallised HDPE laminate tubes developed by Thai packaging group Kim Pack (Bangkok; www.kimpai.com) were fully compatible with the European rigid high-density polyethylene (HDPE) recycling process.
The reclaim initiative’s tests showed the metallised element of the tube did not prevent the HDPE tubes from being correctly sorted within the HDPE rigid recycling stream.

The accreditation group said it also approved the NextCycle in-mould label from Belgian packaging and container manufacturer MCC Verstraete (Meldegem; www.verstraete.mcclabel.com), noting that the product was fully compatible with the European rigid PP recycling stream. The NextCycle label comprises a fully printed PP label wrapped around a PP tub and requires no additional adhesives.
Tests showed more than 98% of the label was removed after grinding and air elutriation stages. The plastic generated by the recycling process can reportedly be reused in closed-loop applications such as HDPE blow-moulded bottles containing up to 25% of the recycled material.
