RECOVERY / ELECTRONIC WASTE
Sweden: Leading waste disposal companies establish joint venture
Two of the leading recycling companies in Scandinavia, the Swedish AB Gotthard Nilsson, which concentrates on materials recycling, and Ragn-Sells AB, expert in waste disposal, have started to cooperate in the field of electronic waste utilisation. The jointly founded Gotthard Ragn-Sells Elektronikatervinning AB (Lövstavägen, S-16570 Hässelby/Stockholm) is in charge of the dismantling and further processing of electronic waste. A new plant for this purpose was put into operation on the outskirts of Stockholm. According to Ulf Engblom, group leader of AB Gotthard Nilsson, other recycling companies for electronic waste are planned to be established in Sweden during the next few years, as a strong expansion in the market is expected due to the rising demand for producer responsibility from the authorities and the consumer.
Although there is no statutory provision for electronic waste in Sweden, the Ministry of the Environment asked the representatives of this branch of industry to submit proposals for the creation of certain regulations. Therefore, several renowned manufacturers of electronic products have concluded contracts with Gotthard Ragn-Sells, which provided the new company with a "flying start".
The annual sales of the two joint venture partners amount to a total of approximately SEK 2.5bn (about DM 500m). As, according to their own statements, they have a perfect collective materials management, know how and technology and have good sales channels for the recycled material, the future of Gotthard Ragn-Sells is expected to be extremely positive, all the more so, as an expansion of the international network is intended for finding business partners outside Europe.
