Rising demand saw the amount of PVC collected and recycled grow by an annual rate of 4% in the UK and Ireland in 2019. A total of 143,428 t of waste PVC was collected and processed, with PVC window profiles accounting for 86,057 t, a rise of 17%, according to latest industry figures.
The UK-Irish total was second only to Germany and represented 19% of the 771,313 t of PVC waste recycled in Europe in 2019, a record high and just over 4% up on 2018. Window profiles and related building products accounted for 47% of the PVC recycled across Europe.
Recovinyl (Brussels / Belgium; www.recovinyl.com), the PVC industry’s recycling scheme, was the largest contributor to the overall total, registering 769,233 t of PVC waste recycled in Europe in 2019. The European PVC industry’s voluntary sustainability initiative VinylPlus (Brussels / Belgium; www.vinylplus.eu) announced earlier this year an increased recycling rate of 4.3% (see Plasteurope.com of 26.10.2020).
