US glass giant acquires composites specialist Sierracin / Aerospace and military technology
PPG Industries (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania / USA; www.ppg.com), one of the world´s largest glass technology groups with annual sales of more than USD 10 bn, has acquired privately owned composites specialist Sierracin Corporation (Sylmar, California / USA; www.sierracin.com) for an undisclosed sum. Sierracin counts as a leading manufacturer of transparent materials for the aerospace industry, including windshields, windows and canopies.
The California company, founded in 1952, introduced the first composite plastic window (for military aircraft) in 1959. Today, Sierracin has some 600 employees and supplies almost all the well-known military and civilian aircraft manufacturers execpt Airbus. The composites specialist also is a supplier of the marine industry.
For PPG, the acquisition represents an opportunity to diversify its technology range, especially for the production of military fighter jets, said CEO Charles E. Bunch. In the plastics sector, PPG is chiefly known as a supplier of glass fibre.
