POLY HI SOLIDUR
Merger with US company / Specialist in UHMW PE processing / Turnover DEM 250m
Solidur Deutschland GmbH & Co KG (previously called Pennekamp + Huesker, PO Box 1264, D-48685 Vreden), which is the largest converter of ultra-high molecular weight PE (UHMW PE), has merged with its most important competitor, the American Poly Hi Group (Fort Wayne, Indiana 46809, USA), which is a subsidiary of the Menasha Corporation (Fort Wayne, USA). The merger to form the Poly Hi Solidur Group took place in January, following on from a strategic alliance which had existed between the two companies since 1993.

The company in Vreden, which is now called Poly Hi Solidur Deutschland GmbH, will still be managed by Heinrich König and Josef Ikemann. All the group's European activities will be controlled from Vreden. 80% of the shares in Poly Hi Solidur Inc. are held by Menasha and 20% by the founder of Solidur, Günther Pennekamp.

Poly Hi Solidur specialises in semi-finished and finished products made of UHMW PE. This engineering plastic features low sliding friction and high impact resistance and is particularly hard wearing and resistant to chemicals and corrosion. Poly Hi Solidur's range of materials also includes HMW PE (e.g. for household chopping boards), HDPE and PP.

Vreden has been involved in the field of engineering plastics for over 30 years. In 1965 Günther Pennekamp founded a two-person company, called Pennekamp + Huesker KG from 1967 onwards, which produced plastic sheets. In 1974 internationalisation began with the founding of Solidur Japan (a joint venture), and in the course of the 1970s and 1980s production spread throughout the world by means of numerous subsidiaries and joint ventures. Now there are 13 factories in 9 countries with a total of 1,000 employees. In 1996, the group turnover was DEM 250m, of which DEM 50m was from Solidur Deutschland. At the moment, Poly Hi Solidur in Vreden has 240 employees, but the number of employees is expected to increase in the next few years, according to the manager Heinrich König. The extent of expansion will be determined by the strategic development and planning process up to 1998.
