POLYONE
New technical blends and compounds / EPS becomes hydrophilic / Expansion in Asia
The compounding and distribution company PolyOne (Cleveland, Ohio/USA; www.polyone.com) took advantage of the British exhibition “Interplas” to unveil a number of new products. PolyOne Th. Bergmann (D-76571 Gaggenau) has now added a new PA/sPS blend to its “Bergamid” line predominantly for automotive parts. The new blend boasts improved dimensional stability, lower moisture absorption and shorter cycle times compared with straight PA. For technical housings, a special PBT/PET blend has been added to the “Bergadur” range. PolyOne is also launching a complete family of filled and modified polyacetal compounds. In addition, the company has added a glass fibre reinforced POM to its “Edgetek” line, a carbon fibre-filled grade to its “Star-tech” family, and a PTFE-filled grade to its “Lubri-Tech” range.
The British company PolyOne Engineered Materials (Durham) is launching new PET compounds under the name “Petal” as alternatives to the “Bergadur” PBT line. These include GF-reinforced, flame-retardant, impact-modified and coloured grades. There are also compounds with a recycled content from the post-consumer sector (PET bottles). The target market here is the automotive sector. Also new is a Ca/Zn-stabilised PVC compound, which can be used as a direct substitute – i.e. without any need for plant modifications – for lead-stabilised PVC. Another British company, PolyOne Compounds & Colors UK (Manchester, UK), is offering an absorption additive concentrate for EPS applications. According to PolyOne, the addition of this concentrate turns EPS from hydrophobic to hydrophilic, which could render the absorbent paper normally used in tray packs for food products superfluous.
Apart from these new technical developments, PolyOne announced a further strengthening of its Asian activities. Because of growing demand, the world´s biggest “independent” compounding company wants to further expand its activities in the next twelve months both in China, where a compounding plant is due to go on stream next year near Shanghai, and in the ASEAN countries.
