PLASTIC OMNIUM
New automobile development centre near Lyon / Investment of EUR 20m / 400 employees
Plastic Omnium (F-92593 Levallois; www.plasticomnium.com), an international player in the French plastics processing industry, officially started operation of “Sigmatech”, its international automotive development centre at Sainte-Julie, situated about 30 km from Lyon. With a capital expenditure of EUR 20m, the company set up a 15,000 m2 technical centre specialising in design, construction, testing and sampling of car exterior applications. The Sigmatech centre employs 400 with 60% engineers and technicians. Plastic Omnium Auto Exterior pools the company´s former R&D teams from Oyonnax, Langres and Levallois. Sigmatech was established to open up new opportunities for co-operation with the European automotive industry in the development of new products and the use of new materials.
As reported (PIE 6, 2003), Plastic Omnium group, the largest subsidiary of Burelle SA (F-75008 Paris; www.burelle.fr), posted sales of EUR 1.62 bn (+3%). The largest segment of Auto Exterior represented EUR 701m (43%), followed by Inergy Automotive Systems (F-75009 Paris; www.inergyautomotive.com), a joint venture with Solvay, with EUR 590m (37%). Inergy is a producer of blown fuel tanks and complete fuel systems for cars. Auto Exterior has a daily output of about 35,000 car bumpers, 10,000 thermoplastic mudguards, 2,500 car boot covers and 3,300 front- end modules. Representing 26% of overall sales, the company´s main customer is General Motors / Opel, followed by Renault / Nissan (24%), PSA Peugeot Citroen (18%), BMW (11%), Jaguar / Volvo / Land Rover (10%) and Volkswagen (6%).
