PLASTIC FANTASTIC
Cash for clunkers

While there are calls – up till now unsuccessful – for the next taxpayer-funded scrappage scheme for combustion cars in Germany, Italy is already a step ahead when it comes to stimulating the economy.

Scrapped: the harsh fate of washed-up appliances in Italy (Photo: PantherMedia/MAXSHOT)

The government in Rome is offering consumers subsidies from a pot of EUR 50 mn if they make the switch to new, energy-saving models manufactured in Europe; the subsidy amounts to no less than 30%.

Sadly, however, the money is not earmarked for a ‘bella macchina’, but instead for much less emotionally charged home appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, and the like. But this is another way of triggering private spending and, with it, plastics processing – so call it a wash.
