Border crossings: the drinking straw saga continues

Last week, we reported here that pouch-drinks producer Capri-Sun wanted to apply to the EU for special authorisation to return to plastic straws. And what do we read now?
Customs authorities in Hamburg recently foiled a particularly perfidious attempt to cross the border into Germany. In a consignment of goods originating from Taiwan and Vietnam, officials reportedly seized some 1.85 mn straws that weren’t made of straw at all, but rather of – as the customs authorities themselves write, admittedly without going into the technical details, environmentally harmful(!) – plastics.

We don’t even want to know how many hours of overtime were required to carry out the official count of the almost 2 mn drinking straws. Whether the straw smugglers from Southeast Asia had read our Capri-Sun report and sensed the big export opportunity, however, we would very much like to know…
