PLASTIC FANTASTIC
From the road to the catwalk
Having a saddler make a dress would be a gutsy move. At first thought, this would be like asking a blacksmith to cut copper connections for your circuit board.

Car materials make a fashion statement (Photo: IAC/Anthony Morrow)

Two young Polish engineers – otherwise entrusted with luxurious, but still bog-standard automotive interior equipment – have proven their acumen in other areas in a convergence of fashion, sustainability, and automotive design, thereby cladding their boss for an impressive presentation at the New York fashion show after just 16 weeks of construction – er, excuse us – sewing time.

The materials: shiny microfibre fabric made from recycled polyester (otherwise used for the headliner), flower appliqués of laser-cut cork and wood (usually cover material for trim parts), and plastic waste from the world’s oceans for the gemstone replica earrings. Whether cars manufactured with the help of the supplier will in the future always be delivered with such a dress as a small bonus remains to be seen.
