PLASTIC FANTASTIC
And the Oscar goes to…a chair?
Doing its job without complaint: the Monobloc (Photo: Hauke Wendler/www.salzgeber.de) |
While actors like George Clooney or Angelina Jolie rake in mounds of cash, the real stars on every film set have four shaky legs and occasionally emit a suspicious “crack” at the small of one’s back. These players don't cost millions, only a few lousy euros, and still they are willingly to assume a leading role from Hollywood to Bollywood.
We are talking about the omnipresent Monobloc, the polypropylene plastic chair that has earned itself an exhibition at Germany’s Vitra Design Museum and has also become the world's best-selling seat. More than a billion of the stackable pieces of lightweight furniture have been sold in Europe alone.
German director Hauke Wendler has now unveiled a full-length film to honour the chair, aptly titled “Monobloc”. He traveled the globe to track the unprecedented international career of the design classic, one that has been copied and plagiarised thousands of times.
The rating for plastics fans: five stars.
