While the rest of the world is shouting from rooftops about the damage from marine litter, Indonesia has gone ahead and made a museum out of plastics waste found in its rivers. Though one could say that a plastics museum is not really a novelty anymore, especially after Spain decided to create and destroy one in a matter of days (see Plasteurope.com of 14.05.2021), this particular museum was created to bring awareness about plastics pollution – not exactly what the Spanish version attempted.
Over a span of three months, 10,000 plastics-waste items – like bottles, bags, satchels, and straws – were put together to create this outdoor exhibition in the town of Gresik, East Java. According to the UN, around 8m t of plastics is dumped into the ocean every year. Indonesia contributes more than 600,000 t of that.
Unlike Spain’s museum though, the one in Indonesia has no plans of disappearing. Where could it possibly go? Not like it’ll biodegrade…
