PLASTIC FANTASTIC
Beware the environmentally unsound jack-o'-lantern
Things that go pumpkin the night... (Photo: PantherMedia/andreoneginYAYMicro)
Halloween is upon us once again, and if the ghosts, ghouls, and goblins were not enough to spook us, everyone’s favourite carved pumpkin could be giving a fright to those concerned about climate change.

But fear not! According to the website Finch, the carbon footprint of a plastic jack-o’-lantern is roughly eight times lower than ceramic versions and even four times below those that grew up in the pumpkin patch. The website said it uses science for its recommendations and noted that the calculations from its “resident scientist” were based on a number of studies.

So, plastic jack-o’-lanterns are the least scary of the bunch. Environmentally that is.
