PLASTIC FANTASTIC
UK milkshake fans in the thick of it
Beer may be a solution (at least chemically), but it’s not the solution to this problem (Photo: Panthermedia/Paulistano)
Just over half a year after its exit from the EU, the UK is facing a rather unique issue: not a single one of the McDonald’s over 1,200 branches across England, Scotland and Wales is currently selling milkshakes. The American fast-food giant cites bottlenecks in the supply chain as the reason for the sweet slushy shutdown. It’s unclear whether the cows are missing, or if it’s paper cups or the flavourings. But a nation accustomed to getting fresh dairy products delivered to its doorstep must be particularly hard hit by the milkshake shortage.

While there are ales to be enjoyed by the ailing, the chain probably won’t be plying customers with the liquid painkiller: unlike many of its eateries on the Continent, McDonald’s British establishments do not serve alcohol.
