PLASTIC FANTASTIC
How should we recycle plastics? Nuke ‘em! No, really.
Will the technology that did this at the Bikini Atoll (and gave us the name for two-piece swimwear) help reduce plastics waste? (Photo: US Department of Energy) |
Who’s the latest player in the plastics recycling game? The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Yes, you read that right. The independent group famous for investigating rogue nuclear bomb developers now wants to help the world reduce the amount of plastic waste.
But there won’t be any massive atomic-polymer fireballs lighting up the skies as the agency has no plans to lob thermonuclear weapons on landfills, so no need to start buying popcorn to munch during the fireworks. The IAEA said its Nutec Plastics unit (NUclear TEChnology for Controlling Plastic Pollution) offers isotopic tracer techniques to track microplastics through different ecosystems, and Team Nuke is also using electron beams to break down plastics. They even have a video.
No word if Duke Nukem is on the payroll.
