PLASTIC FANTASTIC
This road in China is paved with old milk bottles…

Although milk bottles are easily to reclaim, recyclers are often reluctant to take in such waste due to the high rate of contamination caused by leftover milk residue. A US company found just the solution for these bottles in China, and using more than 6,000 used milk bottles, constructed a polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) road.

The “milk bottle road”, as they lovingly call it, was constructed recently at the Xuhui Campus of East China University of Science and Technology, and the material is said to be even sturdier than regular asphalt. Though the idea of using post-consumer waste plastic in road construction has been around for a few years now, a road made of hard-to-recycle milk bottles sure takes innovation in recycling to a whole new level!
