PLASTIC FANTASTIC
The landfill of a different kind

The idea of using polymers for road construction is not entirely novel. In the Netherlands, for example, the is a 30 m bicycle pathway made from recycled bottle caps. The Indonesian city of Cilegon has now broken this record, by a landslide: For the asphalt surface of a 19 km stretch of road, plastics were added to the magic kettle – specifically, 16.5 t of polyethylene waste from a local petrochemical company’s plant.
In the end, this seems like a rather effective way to get rid of waste – as a high-quality tar additive.
