PLASTIC FANTASTIC

There’s nothing like a little bit of plastic to make you feel right at home. Most of us could not imagine life without it. And it seems that insects are now finding new innovative uses for the versatile material, too. A recent study carried out by Canada’s York University found that two species of bees actually use waste plastic as a material to build their nests. While one type prefers PE bag scraps, the other has a fancy for polyurethane-based exterior building sealants.
The scientists said the switch towards artificial material showed the species’ adaptive traits, necessary for survival in a human-dominated environment. Maybe the busy bee of the future will be able to deposit the honey in a plastic jar directly?
