Regardless of what one may or may not know about French culture, at the very latest since the comic “Asterix and Obelix” hit the big screens, even laymen have learned that aside from a deep hatred for the Romans, the Frenchmen of days gone by enjoyed the dubious hobby of carrying menhirs – or standing stones – around. But, what many might have dismissed as the favourite pastime of an oversized cartoon character in blue-striped pants is no fiction – real Frenchmen also enjoy the sport of schlepping the oversized stones around, at least when it comes to charity. The big difference: Today’s stones, decorated by different artists, are made of plastic and weigh only 45 kg.
