PLASTIC FANTASTIC
When plastics move mountains – literally
The issue of plastic litter has fired up more than one critic of the material, but not quite as literally as a recent experiment at Ethiopia’s Erta Ale volcano. When campers dropped a 30 kg plastic bag filled with garbage into the mount, Mother Nature actually saw red as the volcano started spewing out lava. Clearly, incinerating plastic by natural means is no better than chucking it into the world’s oceans. And the moral of the story: Mother Nature can turn up the heat when she comes under fire.
