The Bayarena in the line of fire

As European soccer fans are raising the roof over the ongoing cup, Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) is finding itself faced with an entirely different ball game amid accusations that the “Makrolon” roof of its Bayarena, home of Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen soccer club, constitutes a serious fire hazard. The company has quietly begun replacing the Makrolon sheets to enable the club to, literally speaking, have a roof over its head.
Although BMS is putting on a brave face in public, insisting that it will finance the millions of euros needed for the replacements, it is not inconceivable that the faux-pas prompted a number of people to hit the roof, so to speak. In any case, the revamping of the arena, whose roof was completed only on 2009, better be completed before the onset of the 2012/13 season and well before the chants of “Ole, ole, ole” turn into “the roof, the roof, the roof is on fire”, spelling an end to the ball game we all love so much.
