Not seeing the Christmas tree for all the PET bottles
The city of Kaunas / Lithuania has given new meaning to the carol “O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, Thy leaves are so unchanging.” In fact, the tree standing in front of the city’s town hall could grace the square all year round, and not because it is a traditional fir. Made out of 40,000 plastic bottles, endless wire straps and uncountable small lightbulbs, the 13 m giant is a testimony to sustainability. In a way, creating artist Jolanta Smidtiene let the Christmas genie out of the bottle, using the high holidays to drive home a message in support of recycling. “Real” trees are sure to be green with envy…
