PLASTIC FANTASTIC
Crawling with plastics art
Public life at a snail's pace? The Cracking Art Group's latest installation in Puteaux (Photo: Cracking Art Group) |
No, it is not an alien creepy crawly species sneaking along the streets of the western Parisian suburb of Puteaux. The larger than life blue snails are the latest in a series of art installations put up by the Cracking Art Group in leading European cities. Other animalistic works of art include flying dolphins in front of Milan’s cathedral, pink crocodiles and red poodles distracting traffic in South Korea and – who could forget – the herd of dark blue turtles trying to master the staircases leading up to the G8 environment summit in Syracuse.
The state-of-the-art installations, which inspire not just surprise and excitement but are also meant to prompt a new awareness of public spaces and city infrastructure, would be unthinkable without plastics – after all, what breathes life into these lifesize sculptures is the polyethylene they are made of.
