PLASTICS WASTES
Germany: No change in consumers' enthusiasm for collection
In 1997, German consumers placed 5,618,445 t of used sales packaging in Green Dot collection containers. This is equivalent to 89% of the sales packaging from households and small businesses. In 1996, the figure was 86%. Including impurities, the quantity collected in 1997 amounted to 6,051,250 t, corresponding to a per capita collection of 73.7 kg (1996: 71.2 kg). 5.45m t of recyclables were sorted out of the waste collected in 1997 (1996: 5.32m t). This is equivalent to 86% (1996: 84%) of the sales packaging from households and small business. All sorted materials were forwarded for recycling.
This result meant that the Green Dot company Duales Systeme Deutschland AG (Frankfurter Str. 720-726, D-51145 Köln) was able to fulfil the collection targets set by the Packaging Ordinance on a nationwide basis and to forward the necessary quantities for recycling. The individual figures are as follow: 2.74m t for glass (1996: 2.69m t), 1.37m t for paper and cardboard (1996: 1.32m t), 567,000 t for plastic (1996: 535,000 t), 312,000 t for tinplate (1996: 302,000 t), 40,000 t fo aluminium (1996: 36,000 t) and 420,000 t for composites (1996: 445,000 t).
