Middle East: Considerable growth in imports / Germany by far the largest supplier
Imports of plastics and rubber machinery to the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) – Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – increased by 63.5% in 2007. The highest growth rates were recorded in Oman, with nearly 145%, and Saudi-Arabia, 104%, according to the Plastics and Rubber Machinery Association (KuG, Frankfurt / Germany; www.kug.vdma.org), part of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), ahead of the upcoming "Arabplast" exhibition to be held from 10 to 13 January 2009 in Dubai / UAE. Machinery imports to the UAE rose by more than a third.
In four of the six countries, German machinery manufacturers are the number one suppliers to converters. In Saudi Arabia they were in second place behind competitors from Japan, and in Kuwait in third place after Italy and the US. On average, a third of the machines imported into the GCC countries come from Germany.
