Luxembourg-based "Smart Card" manufacturer Gemplus (www.gemplus.com) is revising its European production structure in reaction to overcapacities in manufacture of PVC card bodies. Processing of PVC sheet at Herne / Germany is being relocated to the company's other "Smart" production site at Havant / UK. Some 180 of the 350 German employees could face redundancy. All of Herne's local activities, including the personalisation of German bank and healthcare cards, is being moved to Filderstadt. The sales force, technical consultants and the R&D team at Ismaning are unaffected. Gemplus had sales of EUR 749m in 2003.
