WEEE directive will affect materials choice in electronics.
Plastics that are easily recyclable will be favoured by OEMs in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) following the introduction of EU legislation (WEEE) demanding the recycling of waste. This is according to Lucia Castro Diaz, research analyst with Frost & Sullivan (London / UK; www.frost.com). The Frost report says plastics that are easier to recycle will command better resale values. These include monomaterials, unblended and crystalline polymers. However, materials such as PVC that are not so easily recycled will lose value, and coloured plastics that do not require paint or finish coatings will become more popular.
