PET RECYCLING
From PET bottles to egg packs / New Austrian joint venture eyes international markets
Austrian plastics converter BKS Ovotherm (A-1120 Vienna; www.ovotherm.com), which claims to be world´s largest producer of transparent packaging for eggs, has teamed up with compatriot plastics recycler Kruschitz (A-9100 Völkermarkt; www.kruschitz-plastic.com) on a new joint venture, Ovopet, for recycling used PET bottles and giving them new life as egg packs. The bottles are collected from all over Austria and recycled into granules at Kruschitz´ Völkermarkt site. Ovopet processes the granules into transparent egg packs, which, according to the jv partners, can then be recycled repeatedly. The packs already are being sold by retail chains in the US, including Harris Teeter, HEB and Super Value, and the first European customer, grocery chain Billa, began selling them at the end of August. According to Ovotherm, the French supermarket chain Carrefour and the British chains Tesco, Sainsbury and Marks & Spencers also have shown interest.
