PET BOTTLE MARKET
Europe uses 2.3m t of bottle polymer in 2002 / Steady growth up to 2007 / New study
European consumption of PET has demonstrated continuous, above-average growth over the past several years and shows no signs of slowing down, according to a new multi-client study by Schönwald Consulting (D-74354 Besigheim; www.schoenwald-consulting.com). According to the study, consumption of PET bottle polymer totalled 2.3 m tonnes in 2002. Some 76% (1.74m t) was used in western Europe, 24% (0.55m t) in eastern and central Europe. More than 70% – 50 bn units – went into the production of preforms. Some 20% of the polymer was processed directly into bottles. For 2007, the consultants expect 3.8m t of PET bottles to be produced in Europe, with 71% of consumption (2.7m t) in western Europe and 29% (1.1m t) in eastern and central Europe.
Schönwald sees the five largest European preform manufacturers, Amcor, Alpla, Constar, Resilux and Mossi & Ghisolfi (M&G), as having a combined European market share of more than 50% in 2002, whereby Italy, based on actual consumption, was the largest market. The main uses for PET bottles were in carbonated soft drinks, followed by mineral water and non-carbonated beverages such as fruit juices and tea. Dairy products, followed by beer and other alcoholic beverages, played a relatively minor role.
Taking into account the constant growth of the PET bottle market and the trends influencing it, the Schönwald study looks at the overall European market and supplies details on the various types of PET bottles (standard / barrier bottles), machinery (injection moulding as well as one- and two-step stretch blow moulding plants), including an overview of the capacities installed in Europe. Information on manufacturers of tools, filling and labelling equipment, raw materials and closures suppliers, as well as producers of preforms and bottles is included along with details on raw materials pricing.
The study, “PIE Bottles in Europe 2002-2007: A Detailed Analysis of the Current Market and Prospects of the Future” is available from Schönwald for EUR 3,900.00 + VAT.
