Chemical recycling plant to be built in Malaysia / Site to use Plastic Energy pyrolysis tech / Throughput cited at 33,000 t/y
The Petronas Chemicals Group (PCG), the petrochemicals arm of Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas (Kuala Lumpur; www.petronas.com) said it plans to build a 33,000 t/y domestic chemical recycling facility in Pengerang with start-up scheduled for H1 2026.

Noting that it had reached a final investment decision to build what it called Asia’s largest advanced chemical recycling plant for plastics, the company said it has licensed technology from UK reclamation process developer Plastic Energy (London; www.plasticenergy.com).
The construction contract was awarded to local firm Mutiara Etnik, the Petronas unit said.
The plan is to convert end-of-life plastics into pyrolysis oil that can be used as a feedstock for polymer production. The Petronas subsidiary has been collaborating with the UK technology supplier since 2019. In addition, the company said last year that it had signed an agreement with US oil giant ExxonMobil to assess the large-scale implementation of recycling.
