PepsiCo (www.pepsico.com) recently announced a new global packaging goal to double the percentage of all beverage servings it sells through reusable containers to 20% from 10% by 2030.

The move comes as part of the agreement with US NGO As You Sow (Berkley, California; www.asyousow.org). In March last year, the FMCG giant had agreed to set a time-bound goal by the end of 2022 for a volume percentage of beverages delivered with containers that avoid or minimise single-use packaging (see Plasteurope.com of 25.03.2022).

The company said it plans to boost reusable delivery systems through expanding its SodaStream (www.sodastream.com) business at home and in workplaces, increasing its use of refillable plastic and glass bottles in selected markets, finding ways to ensure more fountain drinks are served in reusable cups, and pushing growth in products like Gatorade offered as powders and concentrates.

The pledge was made in response to a shareholder proposal filed by As You Sow, which asked the company to report on actions it could take to rapidly reduce dependence on single-use plastic packaging. The NGO, however, added that PepsiCo has not released supporting data explaining its methodology or indicating what portions of the current 10% is attributable to Soda Stream, refillables, fountain drinks, or concentrates. “Further, the company did not report a reusable packaging metric to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) New Plastics Economy Global Commitment for its recent annual progress report” – (see Plasteurope.com of 16.11.2022).”

Competitor and beverage giant Coca-Cola had announced in February 2022 that it intends to increase the share of its beverages delivered in returnable or refillable containers from 16% to 25% by volume by 2030.
