The World Packaging Organization (WPO, Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois / USA; www.worldpackaging.org) recently announced the winners of its international “WorldStar Awards” for 2022. The recent awards saw 440 entries from 37 countries from around the globe, which represents a 30% increase compared to the previous year. The enteries were evaluated by 36 international judges, and saw a total of 240 winners.
The top four most awarded countries of the 2022 edition are Germany, in the first place with 28 awards; Australia & New Zealand, sharing the second place with 27 awards each; Japan, in the third place with 23 awards; and China, in the fourth place with 15 awards.
Among the 240 winners were Nestle’s “Smarties”, the new range of which managed to replace 250m plastic packs annually with barrier papers, labels and carton board. Another was P&G’s “Good Refill System for Shampoo”, which uses 60% less polymer compared to regular plastic bottles. Graphic Packaging International Spain’s (es.graphicpkg.com) “PaperSeal” tray, which replaces high barrier MAP (modified atmosphere packaging), VSP (vacuum skin pack) and top-seal plastic trays with a barrier-lined cartonboard alternative, thus reducing plastics by 80-90% versus traditional trays, was also one of the winners. With “FlatMap”, Dutch company Sealpac (www.sealpacinternational.com) won the prize for a food tray made of a cardboard carrier with a 100% recyclable polyolefin-based liner, which is said to be easy to separate after use. Swiss company Ideewiss (www.packlock.ch) got the 2022 president’s award for a child-resistant and senior-friendly blister medical packaging called “packlock”, with less aluminium and plastic use.
The WordStar Award ceremony for 2022 will take place in-person on 4 May, in Milan / Italy, during the “Ipack Ima” (www.ipackima.com) show (see Plasteurope.com of 07.07.2020). The winners for special categories – president’s award, sustainability award, marketing award and packaging that saves food award – will also be announced during the in-person ceremony.
