Growing market for plastics milk containers
A 20%/y growth is being reported by materials suppliers in the demand for polymer for the production of plastics milk containers. Greiner of Austria expects an increase in its production of PC milk bottles from 250,000 bottles in 1994 to between 8m and 10m bottles in 1996. Plysu of the UK produces 8.5m HDPE bottles each week. The use of HDPE bottles has increased 260% over the last 5 years in France. A 20% rise in annual growth has been reported by BP Chemicals for its milk grade polymer. Bayer claims to have a 90% share of the milk bottle market in the Netherlands with its Makrolon 1239 and Makrolon 2858 PC grades. PC milk bottles can be re-used at least 40-60 times.
