New developments and products
Lamination and coextrusion films
ExxonMobil Chemical (Houston, Texas / USA; www.exxonmobilchemical.com) is now offering two low-gel grades of its “Exceed” LLDPE specifically designed for high quality lamination and coextrusion film applications. Exxon Mobil says the low gel levels offer processors the opportunity to more easily produce film with improved sealing and tear resistance to a more consistent quality.

During the production of lamination film excessive gel content can cause optical imperfections and printing and sealing problems. In surface protection film, gels can cause tearing during peeling, and in coextrusion they can cause film breaks. With the new Exceed grades, gel content is measured using an optical gel detection device that generates reliable data for resins intended for sensitive applications. Measured gel levels for the grades, 1018LC and 1018LE, are shown on a certificate of analysis.

Cryovac teams up with supermarket and butcher
Anglo Beef Processors (ABP), UK supermarket chain Sainsbury´s and packaging specialist Cryovac (GB-St Neots PE19 2HN; www.sealedair.com) have joined to produce a new range of meat packs under the retail outlet´s “Taste the Difference” premium quality range with extended shelf life.

Cryovac was selected to provide secure, high quality, printable packaging that would operate on high-speed lines at the plant producing 600,000 packs/week. Various cuts of meat are packaged using either Cryovac “Darfresh” vacuum skin packaging or BB4L plain shrink barrier bag with U-BRT tray. The outer packaging consists Cryovac EOD laminate pouches printable in nine colours, while the finished packs are placed in clear PVC trays for retail display.

Microwaveable OPP barrier films from Toray Plastics
A range of clear barrier OPP films for food packaging has been introduced by Toray Plastics (Rhode Island, USA; www.torayplasticsamerica.com). “Torayfan” CB-S 70G and 80G heat-sealable and CB-P 70G non-sealable clear barrier films are non-coated, have moisture vapour transmission rates (MVTR) equal to PVdC-coated films and are microwaveable and non-yellowing. The films are suitable for such applications as the MVTR barrier web of multi-layer laminations, a grease liner for packages requiring oil resistance and source reduction for thick BOPP webs.

Freedonia sees USD 3.6 bn produce packaging use
Trends towards healthier eating and rising demand for fresh-cut, ready-to-eat produce will contribute to the 5.1% annual growth in the US produce packaging sector, according to market research group Freedonia (Cleveland, Ohio / USA; www.freedoniagroup.com). The market´s value is expected to reach USD 3.6 bn (EUR 2.9 bn) in 2008, whereby above-average increases are predicted for plastic containers, bags and liners and reusable plastic containers at the expense of corrugated boxes. Salad packaging, which accounted for 11% of demand in 2003, will remain the fastest-growing segment, at 9.5% per year.

Eastman to show glass polymer at “Emballage 2004”
The new “Glass Polymer” developed by Eastman Specialty Chemicals (Kingsport, Tennessee / USA; www.eastman.com) will be a key feature in its exhibit at “Emballage 2004”, the packaging exhibition being held in Paris / France, from 22-26 November. The company says the glass polymer looks and feels like glass and allows thick-walled containers to be produced by injection- or blow-moulding. Eastman will also display the latest developments in its “Embrace” co-polyester, which it says provides packaging designers with the opportunity to produce attractive graphics and a label that can fit on high contour containers.

Trendy snuff boxes from Ten Cate Plasticum
Ten Cate Plasticum (NL-Tilburg; www.tcplasticum.nl) has developed a new, round snuff box made of plastic for Fiedler & Lundgren (S-Malmo; www.flsnus.se), subsidiary of Scandinavian Tobacco and Orlik Tobacco. The Dutch plastics group said the two-piece box that can be opened and closed using just one hand is “more trendy,” with a feminine look, is user friendly and has a perfect closing. The parts are injection moulded and labelled in-mould to differentiate different flavours of tobacco, and the box comes in a variety of metallic colours.

Audus Noble launches glass-like PET jars
A range of heavyweight, clear PET jars designed for the toiletries and cosmetics markets has been introduced by Audus Noble (GB-Northumberland; www.audusnoble.co.uk). The jars, which have a glass-like quality to improve visual and tactile shelf appeal, are claimed to have good clarity and barrier properties, as well as being robust and easily decorated. Six jars cover the range in size from 75ml to 300ml.

Greiner Packaging with new PET spirits bottles
Two PET bottles, one inside the other, with the inside bottle holding the contents – this is the design adopted for the new 0.7 litre bottle developed by Austria´s Greiner Packaging (A-4550 Kremsmünster; www.greiner-gpi.com) for the Krugmann distillery. Both the inside and the outside bottle have space for labelling. The air cushion between the two PET containers acts as a natural thermal insulation layer for the popular Caipirinha and similar alcoholic beverages, explains the manufacturer.
