Conductive polymers: Marketing and research cooperation with DuPont
Ormecon Chemie GmbH & Co KG (Ferdinand-Harten-Str. 7, D-22949 Ammersbek), global leaders in the field of fundamental and application-oriented research for conductive polymers (“organic metals”) has signed a cooperation agreement with DuPont. DuPont will market Ormecon´s polyaniline products worldwide. Project negotiations have been running for about one and a half years and took on specific shape last summer, Dr. Bernhard Wessling, managing partner of Ormecon, explained to PIE. The agreement with DuPont also covers future products from Ormecon and, at the same time, DuPont is being given a licence to use Ormecon patents for a large number of applications and processes when products containing polyaniline are employed. Existing marketing arrangements, such as the cooperation with Chemische Werke Kluthe GmbH (D-69115 Heidelberg) are being retained, says the company.
Ormecon was founded in 1996 as a 100% subsidiary of Zipperling Kessler & Co and produces anti-corrosion coatings and final surfacings based on polyaniline for printed circuit boards. The coating systems represent a breakthrough in the application of conductive polymers and have so far been successfully used in a wide range of applications, extending from railway bridges, waste water treatment plants and chemical production plants through to pipelines, container ships and public buildings.
For Wessling, who has been working on “organic metals” for more than 20 years, the “cooperation with DuPont means key recognition of the research and development work that Ormecon has already invested in the polyaniline-based products already available; it provides a sound point of departure for the future”. Ormecon currently has a payroll of 20; this could increase to between 50 and 70 in future. Ormecon sees its role for the future as being even more of a research and technology company, says Wessling.
According to a press release, Dr. Robert G. Dorothy, head of the “Conductive Polymers Venture” department at DuPont, is expecting new application potential from the Ormecon products and has high hopes for the products that result from the planned continuation of research and development at Ormecon.
