ORBITA-FILM
Investment of EUR 23m in 2000 / Total capacity rises to 100,000 tonnes / Good earnings
The strategic alignment of Orbita-Film GmbH (Köthener Str. 11, D-06369 Weißandt-Gölzau) in the year 2000 is again oriented to specific growth. Plasteurope.com was able to see this for itself during a visit to the company. According to the managing partner of Poli-Film Holding, Lutz Runkel, around EUR 23m will be invested in the site during the course of this year. The lion´s share of the expenditures will go into four new extrusion lines, giving the company an installed capacity of 100,00 t/y. The main aim of the new facilities is to produce industrial film, but “without neglecting the standard products such as agricultural, building and packaging films”, explained Orbita´s Managing Director, Dr. Ing. Klaus Hoffman, to PIE.
For Orbita´s management team, the commercial success of the company – which was taken over by the Poli-Film Group (HQ: Hammern 10, D-51688 Wipperfürth) in 1991 – is due not only to the efforts that have been made to achieve cost leadership, but also to the decision to concentrate on core activities: “We manufacture semi-finished products and basically, we do not do any finishing.” But the company also wants technological leadership, saying that one is not possible without the other. Only with the very newest equipment, Plasteurope.com was told, was it possible to satisfy the mounting requirements of the customers. Apart from this, only these state-of- the-art machines were able to take full advantage of the properties of modified and advanced materials.
Just how seriously they take this philosophy at Orbita can be seen from the equipment in the applications development department. Here, for example, there is a five-layer laboratory extruder which works entirely in the service of the customers. The company also has very close contact with the university in Halle, where the plastics department is always ready to offer advice when needed.
In 1999, with 52 extrusion lines and a workforce of around 345, Orbita-Film reached its sales target of approx. EUR 82m. The management also described the earnings situation as good. The medium-term business plan, which also includes the investment decisions for the year 2000, provides for a doubling of turnover.
