NORDENIA
New industrial packaging plant in Poland / Capacity 8,600 t/y / Twenty production units
Nordenia International AG (HQ: D-48268 Greven; www.nordenia.com), a globally-operating producer of flexible packaging, technical films and product components, is further expanding its business in Eastern Europe. A new plant for the production of film to secure goods during transport and for packaging sacks was recently brought on stream by the group´s subsidiary Nordenia Polska Zdzieszowice. This plant constitutes Nordenia´s third production facility in Poland already. The other two sites produce consumer packaging and flexible high-capacity containers.
On account of its size and dynamic development, Poland is currently one of Nordenia´s biggest customer countries. Board chairman, Peter Mager sees the Eastern European market as holding enormous potential: ”In a country like Poland, film is increasingly coming to replace other packaging materials. The growth in the economy and the prospect of EU membership also make Poland an attractive location for Nordenia.” Added to this come the cost advantages that go with this site – greater customer proximity for products destined for Polish, Czech and Slovakian consumers and the good infrastructure, with the Zdzieszowice plant just a few kilometres away from the motorway.
As the first step, Nordenia has set up an annual capacity of 8,500 t for film extrusion and downstream processing, including printing, in Zdzieszowice, with investment of some EUR 4.6m. Shrink film and shrink hoods for securing pallet contents are supplied chiefly to the construction industry, although also to manufacturers of glass packaging and household and electrical appliances in Poland and both the Czech and Slovak Republics. Some of these are internationally-operating customers whose Eastern European plants are now being served directly from Zdzieszowice. Further expansion is planned, so that the new plant will also be able to manufacture products for other industrial applications in Poland and neighbouring countries.
Nordenia International AG has 20 production facilities supplying a wide variety of customers. Eight plants are located in Germany, six throughout the rest of Europe and six outside Europe. After achieving sales of EUR 466m in 1999, the group exceeded the DEM 1bn (EUR 511m) sales mark for the first time in 2000.
