NETSTAL
Plans to cut up to 60 more jobs / Order intake down 30%
Netstal-Maschinen (Näfels / Switzerland; www.netstal.com) is indeed feeling the effects of the economic crisis, as a company spokesman told the Swiss media. However, CEO Bernhard Merki said that orders are down by “only” 30-35% year-on-year. Compared with the company’s core business, which has suffered a massive downturn, the PET performs segment is still performing well, he told PIE. Figures for other manufacturers of injection moulding machinery are far worse.
Even so, Netstal plans to further adjust its workforce in response to a further decline in business since February. At that time, the machinery manufacturer introduced short-time working, which under Swiss law can be applied for a maximum of 18 months. Also in February, 44 employees were dismissed. The remaining 540 now have been informed that a further 60 jobs are on the line, although Merki said it is not yet certain whether the number will be this high. A consultation procedure has been implemented, and the company will discuss possible moves with representatives of the workforce. Employees have until 29 May 2009 to put forward proposals to avoid dismissals. A redundancy plan will be put in place if job cuts are deemed necessary.
