Co-processed renewable feedstock for polymer production hits the market
— By Plasteurope.com correspondent —

Finnish refiner Neste (Espoo; www.neste.com) recently announced the launch of its co-processed renewable feedstock, built for polymer and chemical production, as a part of its Neste RE brand. The feedstock is manufactured by co-processing renewable raw materials with fossil crude oil at Neste’s refinery in Porvoo, Finland.

According to Neste, the raw materials include waste and residue oils and fats like used cooking oil or residues from vegetable oil processing. The company already has experience in co-processing renewable raw materials into marine fuel and heating liquids.

Neste has started building an order book in the new market segment. In November 2024, Neste and Singapore-based essential chemicals company PCS (Singapore; www.pcs.com.sg) struck a deal for the supply of renewable feedstock at PCS facilities on Jurong Island in Singapore. PCS reported that using Neste RE it planned to manufacture essential products, such as ethylene, propylene, or butadiene, across its portfolio. These essential products were due to be supplied to customers in various sectors across the region, including Mitsubishi Corporation (Tokyo; www.mitsubishicorp.com) and Toray Plastics (North Kingstown, Rhode Island, USA; www.plastics.toray).

In October 2024, Neste signed an agreement with Braskem (São Paolo; www.braskem.com.br), the largest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas, under which the Finnish company agreed to supply the innovative product to produce circular and bio-circular polymer resins and chemicals under Braskem’s Wenew brand.

In April 2024, Neste agreed on a strategic collaboration with South Korea’s Lotte Chemical (Seoul; www.lottechem.com) on replacing fossil resources with renewable raw materials in the production of chemicals and plastics.
