Polymer-grade lactides for biopolymers up for sale
NatureWorks (Minnetonka, Minnesota / USA; www.natureworksllc.com) plans to begin marketing a range of polymer-grade lactides. The company uses the lactides, produced from lactic acid, to produce its “Ingeo” biopolymers. It plans to make 10,000-20,000 t/y of its lactide product portfolio available through the new initiative.
CEO Marc Verbruggen said the sale of Ingeo lactide intermediates for use in polymer applications will support rapidly growing demand for bio-based plastics and fibres. NatureWorks produces Ingeo biopolymers at its site in Blair, Nebraska / USA, and doubled its production to 140,000 t/y in June 2009.
