M.A. HANNA
Acquisition: Akzo plastic colorants business
With a target of annual international sales of USD 1bn by 2001, acquisitions are a key plank in the expansion strategy of M.A. Hanna Company (Suite 35-5000, 200 Public Square, Cleveland, OH 44114-2304, USA). Its latest buy is the Sadolin Masterbatch plastic colour and additive masterbatch business of Akzo Nobel Inks A/S (16 Naverland, DK-2600 Glostrüp). The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Akzo acquired the Sadolin business as part of its acquisition of the paints business of Casco Nobel Inks in 1995. As the group had already divested its Wilson Color S.A. (rue Melville Wilson 2, B-5330 Assesse) masterbatch business to Hanna in 1992, it clearly wanted to sell this part of the operation to focus on the core area of paints. The Sadolin business turnover is approximately USD 6m supplying a full range of colour and additive masterbatches. It is therefore a logical fit with the rest of Hanna's European masterbatch business. The acquisition includes Sadolin's plant in Denmark which will now produce and sell products under the Wilson Color name.
