MONTELL
New "Catalloy" plant in The Netherlands
Montell Europe (HQ: PO Box 625, NL-2130 AF Hoofddorp) plans to build a DM 200m plant at Moerdijk, The Netherlands, to produce 180,000 t/y of polyolerlns via the company's "Catalloy" process. The plant, scheduled to go onstream in Q4 1995 on a new Montell site, will employ around 100. The joint venture between Shell and Montedison, including Himont, currently operates two Catalloy plants, at Ferrara, Italy, with a capacity of 100,000 t/y, and at Bayport, Texas, with a capacity of 80,000 t/y.

Montell's Catalloy technology is a combination of a proprietary process and a catalyst. Its products have a wide range of applications in the automotive and industrial sectors. According to the company, the process has "minimal impact" on the environment as it takes place in a closed system. Consumption of polyolefins produced with the Catalloy gas phase polymerisation process will double over the next three years, to meet growing demand in flexible packaging films, consumer goods and durable applications, Montell predicts.
