Collaboration with Scan Sverige yields designed-for-recycling PP mono-material food packaging
South African packaging manufacturer Mondi (Johannesburg; www.mondigroup.com) said it has developed mono-material polypropylene food packaging in collaboration with Swedish meat and charcuterie provider Scan Sverige (Stockholm; www.scan.se). The collaboration kicked off in 2022.

Part of Nordic food group HKScan, the Swedish food producer said it would use the solution, which is compatible with its existing machinery, for its Pärsons-brand sliced ham, salami, and plant-based cold cuts.
Mondi added that its WalletPack solution is designed for recycling and can be “effectively sorted” at the Site Zero recycling facility in Sweden. It noted that the previous Scan Sverige Pärsons packaging was made of PET-polyethylene and polyamide-polyethylene laminates, rendering it virtually unrecyclable.

Scan Sverige said it is investing in its aim of 100% recyclable packaging by the end of 2025 and is working to switch to recyclable mono-materials.
