Austrian packaging group Mondi (Vienna; www.mondigroup.com) says Bell Germany (Barssel-Harkebrügge; www.bellfoodgroup.com) will be using its recyclable “WalletPack” packaging for the latter’s “Abraham” range of serrano, prosciutto and savoy sliced ham.
According to Mondi, the new packaging requires 37% less material and will replace the multi-material, non-recyclable plastic solutions currently on offer. With the switch, Bell Germany aims to reduce its plastics waste by 35 t/y. In September 2020, Mondi provided Austrian dairy producer SalzburgMilch’s (Salzburg; www.milch.com) with paper-based packaging solutions to reduce the dairy’s plastics use by 40 t/y (see Plasteurope.com of 25.09.2020).
The Mondi WalletPack, which comes with a re-close function to prevent food spoilage, has been verified by the German institute for recyclability and product responsibility Cyclos-HTP (Aachen; www.cyclos-htp.de) as 93% recyclable.
For 2020, Mondi reported an underlying EBITDA of EUR 1.35m, representing an 18% year-on-year decrease. The Bell Food Group, on the other hand, grew in 2020, with adjusted sales revenue rising by 2.7% to CHF 4.1 bn (EUR 3.72 bn), EBIT growing by 7.6% to CHF 160.4m, and the annual profit improving by 12.1% to CHF 117.7m, compared to the previous year.
