MONDI
"Green" cellulose-reinforced polymer / Production advantages for moulders / Customised product offering
Packaging and paper group Mondi (Johannesburg / South Africa; www.mondigroup.com) has launched "Fibromer", a new polymer reinforced with cellulose fibre which has numerous potential injection moulding applications in industries such as automotive, logistics/transport, electronics and furniture. Fibromer was developed in a new compounding process that homogenously mixes kraft pulp fibre with a polymer granule.

Mondi says the new composite offers manufacturing advantages, including faster injection moulding cycles and higher productivity, compared to other composites such as those containing short glass fibres, other natural fibres or talcum-filled material. The material is said to have higher strength, increased stiffness and high-impact strength at low temperatures, as well as providing higher heat distortion than talcum-filled compounds and enhanced dimensional stability. The polymer is also lightweight with low odour, low density and very low abrasion, Mondi claimed.
