“Miprotex” barrier coating introduced for foodstuff protection / Cost efficient packaging material alternative
The extrusion coatings business of Mondi (Europe: Vienna / Austria; www.mondigroup.com) has developed “Miprotex” barrier coating for food packaging, which offers protection against aromatics and grease and prevents the migration of mineral oil. The company said that in tests the packaging material showed performance comparable with EVOH laminates and provides a cost efficient alternative to traditional high-barrier materials such as aluminium and EVOH, offering a barrier solution against softeners and other substances that can also migrate into the packed food.
To ensure the protection recommended against mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons by the German consumer health watchdog Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (BfR, Berlin; www.bfr.bund.de), a barrier between food and packaging is necessary. Mondi said that “Miprotex” is an efficient solution that complies with regulations concerning direct food contact and additionally offers barriers against mineral oil, aroma and grease as well as protection against oxygen and water vapour.
