New Solar EVA joint venture in Malaysia / Output to meet growing regional demand for clean energy products
To cater for the rapidly rising demand for clean energy products in Japan, the US and China, Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello (MCTI, Tokyo / Japan; www.mc-tohcello.co.jp/english) – a subsidiary of Mitsui Chemicals (Tokyo / Japan; www.mitsuichem.com) – has entered into a joint venture for the production of solar cell encapsulants, or Solar EVA, with Malaysia’s Scientex Berhad (Kuala Lumpur; www.scientex.com.my). MCTI said it chose Scientex for the project because the two companies already operate a jv and since the Malaysian company has superior processing technology.
The 50:50 joint venture company, called MCTI Scientex Solar, is based in Malacca and headed by Tetsuo Masuda, the incumbent CEO of Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello. Once the new capacity comes on stream in early 2012, it will raise MCTI’s annual production capacity to 50,000 t/y.
