US carbon fibre and composites activities to be bundled in new business unit
Japanese carbon fibre and composites specialist Mitsubishi Rayon (MRC, Tokyo; www.mrc.co.jp) has announced plans to merge its existing US activities – embodied by Newport Adhesives & Composites (Irvine, California / USA; www.newportad.com) and Grafil (Sacramento, California / USA; www.grafil.com) – into one new business. On 1 April, the two businesses will join to become Mitsubishi Rayon Carbon Fiber and Composites (Irvine, California), under the helm of Susumu Sasaki.
The move comes on the heels of MRC’s acquisition late last year of Aldila (Poway, California / USA; www.aldila.com), a manufacturer of carbon fibre golf shafts – see PIEWEeb of 12.12.2012 – and is part of the Japanese company’s strategy to position its carbon fibre and composites materials activities as a core business for the future.
