Daesan MMA joint venture with Honam to raise MMA and acrylic resin capacity / Output geared towards meeting regional LED demand
In order to meet rapidly growing Asian demand for light guide panels for LCD and LED televisions, Daesan MMA Corporation – a 50:50 joint venture between Mitsubishi Rayon (MRC, Tokyo / Japan; www.mrc.co.jp) and Honam Petrochemical Corporation (Seoul / South Korea; www.hpc.co.kr) – is to raise its MMA monomer and acrylic resin pellet production.
Honam Petrochemical Plant 3 currently is capable of producing 90,000 t/y of MMA, which is to be more than doubled, bringing total MMA output to 188,000 t/y. The additional 98,000 t/y are to be commissioned in January 2013. Following a debottlenecking carried out at the beginning of this year, Daesan MMA Corp currently has a nameplate capacity for 50,000 t/y of acrylic resin pellets. A 60,000 t/y capacity expansion is to go on stream in November 2012, raising total acrylic resin capacity to 110,000 t/y.
After acquiring Lucite International in mid-2009 – see Plasteurope.com of 08.06.2009 – MRC became one of the world’s leading MMA producers with production facilities in Europe, the US and Asia.
